Passengers of Ukrainian "Intercity" trains and several long-distance routes now have the opportunity to use high-speed wireless internet during their journeys. The carrier "Ukrzaliznytsia" has deployed a network via the Starlink satellite system, ensuring connectivity on both domestic and international routes.

Coverage and connection conditions

The technology has already been implemented in 16 trains of the "Intercity" and "Intercity+" categories, as well as in four popular long-distance trains. Access conditions to the network vary depending on the type of train:

  • In "Intercity" trains, each passenger has access to 2 GB of free traffic. To connect, simply select the network named WiFi test.
  • In long-distance trains, the free traffic limit is increased to 5 GB. In this case, connection is made through a special website.

For those who require more data, there is an option to purchase an unlimited package for 120 hryvnias. It provides 5 GB of traffic at full speed, after which the speed drops to 1 Mbit/s. Passengers can also activate existing vouchers.

Technical limitations and security

"Ukrzaliznytsia" warns that internet operation via Starlink may have specific features. For security reasons, the network may work slower or temporarily disappear, especially on high-speed sections of the route.

This is due to speed limit restrictions for Starlink terminals in Ukraine. Such measures are necessary to protect the railway from the use of similar equipment by enemy drones.

Other carrier updates

In addition to implementing satellite internet, the railway carrier continues to modernize its fleet. Recently, new domestically produced carriages were added to popular routes to Uzhhorod and Dnipro. They are equipped with additional conveniences for passengers in the upper bunks and children.

Specialized children's carriages have also entered service. It should be noted that the age category for free travel in them differs depending on whether it is a domestic or international route.

The carrier has also paid special attention to the rules for transporting bicycles. Passengers were reminded that it will not be possible to enter one of the types of trains with two-wheeled transport at all.
