Microsoft has unveiled an updated roadmap for enhancing the user experience in Windows 11. This initiative continues the K2 program, launched four months ago to restore user trust in the operating system. The company confirmed that several changes are already being tested in the Windows Insider program, with a mass release planned for this autumn.

Return of Flexibility and Control Over Updates

Completed tasks include refinements to key interface elements: the Start menu, taskbar, File Explorer, widgets, and Windows Update. Users will likely appreciate the return of the ability to move the taskbar to different sides of the screen—a feature removed in earlier versions of the system. Additional settings for the Start menu will also be introduced, as well as the ability to skip updates during the Windows installation process.

Memory Optimization for Systems with 8 GB of RAM

One of Microsoft’s top priorities for the remainder of 2026 is optimizing RAM usage. The goal is ambitious: reduce system resource consumption to ensure fast and responsive performance on PCs with 8 GB of RAM or more. To achieve this, a more efficient memory allocator is being implemented, WinUI 3 apps are being optimized, and the load from Chromium and WebView2 components is being reduced.

Although the company has not provided specific figures on memory savings, work in this area is already underway. Microsoft has not clarified whether these improvements will be released as a single package or as part of a series of updates.

File Explorer Improvements and New Features

The architecture of File Explorer has been modified to speed up launch times, improve navigation, and enhance stability. Developers have resolved several known issues: blurry thumbnails, unstable transitions to the home page, keyboard navigation errors, file renaming problems, and incorrect display of file sizes.

The plan for the current year also includes four new development directions:

  • Faster initial system setup process;
  • Simplified access to family and parental control features;
  • More natural voice interaction;
  • Continued work on improving memory efficiency on PCs with at least 8 GB of RAM.

According to Microsoft, all the listed changes will be available to a wide range of users this autumn. For now, many of them can only be evaluated in Windows Insider test builds.
