Preparations for the 2026–2027 heating season have begun in the Chernihiv region. However, according to local authorities, the upcoming winter could be one of the most difficult in recent years. Vyacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, warned that the region must be ready for the worst-case scenario due to ongoing Russian attacks on critical infrastructure.
Shelling Slows Down Repair Work
While some winter preparation activities are proceeding according to schedule, a significant number of tasks are lagging behind. The main reason is the constant shelling by Russian forces. Furthermore, the aggressor is deliberately targeting facilities where protection reinforcement or restoration work is already underway.
Head of RMA Forecast: It Will Be Harder
In an interview with Suspilne, Vyacheslav Chaus expressed concern that the next winter will definitely not be easier than the one the region has already endured. "It will be harder, more difficult," he emphasized. The Head of the Administration acknowledged that this forecast is based not only on the official position but also on what he sees with his own eyes: the enemy's actions and the general situation in the region.
"God willing, I am wrong. Of course, we want such forecasts not to come true. But I believe that, as in all other areas, we must prepare for the worst-case scenario," Chaus added.
Creating a Reserve of Generators
A key direction of preparation is strengthening the protection of critical infrastructure. Special attention is being paid to creating a reserve of generators to ensure the uninterrupted operation of life-support facilities. Authorities understand that under conditions of constant threats, the availability of autonomous power sources will be a decisive factor for the survival of the population during the cold period.
