In October 2026, the Ukrainian military regained control of more territory than Russian forces were able to seize, while losses of the Russian army reached a record high for the entire full-scale war. According to RBC-Ukraine, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced this in his Telegram channel while summarizing the combat results for the month.
Record monthly and daily losses
According to the Head of State, over October the Russian army lost 54,400 troops killed and severely wounded. The President called this the highest monthly figure in the entire history of the full-scale war. Daily losses also broke records: according to his data, on October 21, the losses of Russian troops amounted to 2,250 killed and wounded.
Regaining territory at the front
At the same time, the Defense Forces continued to recapture seized areas. According to Zelenskyy, in October Ukrainian defenders liberated 96.2 square kilometers of territory—10.4 sq km more than the Russian forces managed to occupy during the same period. The President thanked the Ukrainian military for the achieved results.
Results of SUF and SBU units
October was marked by record figures in the destruction of Russian military personnel across several Ukrainian units at once. The Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine hit 64,807 enemy targets during the month, including 16,796 Russian servicemen; SUF Commander Robert "Magyar" Brovdi called this result the highest of the entire full-scale war. High figures were also recorded in the Security Service of Ukraine: in one week, operators of the "Alpha" Special Operations Center neutralized 3,198 Russian servicemen, of whom, according to verified data, 2,146 were killed and 1,052 were wounded. The SBU emphasized that this is a record for the number of enemy manpower hit in such a short period.
Assessments against the background of the entire war
These monthly results are part of the larger-scale losses that the Russian army has been suffering since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. According to estimates by the British publication The Economist, the number of dead Russian soldiers may range from 374 to 770 thousand, and taking into account the wounded, total Russian losses are estimated at 1.4–2.1 million people.
President's position
Concluding his summary, Zelenskyy stated: "Russia is losing. We are holding our positions, liberating territory, and making sure that every day of the war costs the aggressor as much as possible. To stop these insane losses, it is enough for Russia to choose a ceasefire and diplomacy."
