Zelensky Appoints Sviatoslav Zaiets Commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Replacing Shapovalov
On September 2, 2026, Volodymyr Zelensky appointed Sviatoslav Zaiets Commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, dismissing Hennadii Shapovalov from the post. Zaiets is a graduate of the Air Assault Forces who, in 2014, led a blockaded unit out of Crimea.
