Pavel Petrov, spokesperson for the State Emergency Service of Kyiv, confirmed that extinguishing the fire at "Pochaina" is associated with particular difficulties. According to him, rescuers have to act with a view to safety: during the extinguishing, an alarm was sounded several times due to the threat of structural collapse or re-ignition, which forced firefighters to retreat to a safe distance. In addition to the market, fire brigades worked at two other locations in the Obolon district and one in the Holosiivskyi district, but the fires there were extinguished during the night hours.
Fate of entrepreneurs and damage assessment
The human factor in this tragedy is no less important than the material damage. One of the affected entrepreneurs, who had been trading at the market for three years, talked about the condition of his store. According to him, the impact on the building was so strong that all the shutters were torn off their hinges, and the bookshelves fell. "The books are slightly damaged, there is a lot of broken glass," he described the scene of destruction.
Despite the scale of the disaster, some pavilion owners whose stalls were damaged but not completely destroyed are already planning to resume operations. However, it is extremely difficult to assess the exact amount of damage at this time due to the continuing smoldering and the need to conduct a detailed inspection of the structures.
