Ukrainian General Staff reports hitting two S-400 launchers near Vygonichi and striking warehouses and UAV facilities in the Donetsk direction

On 16 and 17 September 2026, the Ukrainian Defence Forces, according to an official report by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), delivered a series of precision strikes on a number of key military targets of the Russian side across several directions. As reported by RBC-Ukraine citing the General Staff's summary, two launchers of the S-400 air defence missile system were hit in Bryansk Oblast near the settlement of Vygonichi. The General Staff emphasised that "work on key military targets of the Russian aggressor continues," pointing to the systematic nature of such operations.

Strikes on UAV infrastructure and logistics hubs

In addition to air defence systems, facilities linked to the enemy's unmanned aviation came under fire. In the Donetsk area, according to AFU data, a complex where strike UAVs were stored, prepared for use and launched was hit. In addition, strikes were delivered on warehouses of material and technical supplies of the Russian occupation forces in Kurakhove and Nova Maryivka in Donetsk Oblast, as well as in Luhansk. In Strelkove (Kherson Oblast) and Druzhne (Luhansk Oblast), hits on areas of enemy troop concentration were recorded.

Broader context: SBU strikes in Rostov and Russian counter-actions

The series of strikes on 16–17 September fits into a broader picture of mutual attacks. Earlier, as reported by RBC-Ukraine, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) delivered powerful strikes on three Russian aircraft and three helicopters in Rostov-on-Don. At the same time, according to Russian sources, the Russian Armed Forces in response hit "Neptune" system launchers and UAV production workshops on Ukrainian territory. Thus, both sides record successes in inflicting damage on the enemy's military infrastructure, while hostilities retain an intense character on all fronts.

Contradictory data

The Ukrainian side, in the person of the AFU General Staff, claims to have hit precisely two S-400 air defence launchers near Vygonichi. Russian regional media (in particular, federal agencies) report a suicide-drone attack in Bryansk Oblast, as a result of which four local residents were wounded, but neither confirm nor deny the fact of the destruction of specific air defence systems. In other words, no independent confirmation or denial from Moscow of the loss of two S-400 systems had been received as of the time of publication. Moreover, the illustrations provided for the topic show an air defence missile system that externally corresponds to the "Buk" family (characteristic cylindrical containers on a multi-axle chassis), which is not identical to the configuration of S-400 launchers with rectangular transport-launch containers. The discrepancy in the identification of the equipment remains a subject of debate between the parties to the conflict.

Assessment and outlook

The totality of the claimed strikes — from air defence launchers to MTS warehouses and UAV facilities — indicates that Ukrainian forces continue to deliberately strike the elements that sustain the combat readiness of Russian groupings: air defence, logistics, and reconnaissance/strike means. The Russian side, in turn, demonstrates the ability to deliver counter-strikes on industrial and military facilities on Ukrainian territory. The AFU General Staff emphasised that such operations are methodical in nature and are not limited to isolated episodes.
