Historic Breakthrough: 745 Square Kilometers of Liberated Territory

The situation on the front line underwent radical changes in August 2026. According to official statements made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Mykhailo Drapaty, Ukrainian airborne troops conducted one of the largest offensive operations in recent times on the Alexandrovsk direction. As a result of active hostilities, territory covering 745 square kilometers came under the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This success was made possible thanks to the coordinated actions of airborne assault forces, which managed to breach the enemy's deeply echeloned defense.

Enemy Casualties and Strategic Objectives

The price of this victory for the Russian army proved to be extremely high. In his address, President Zelenskyy cited shocking figures: Russian losses amounted to at least 9,550 killed and more than 6,600 wounded. The head of state emphasized that these figures indicate that the Ukrainian army was able to deal a significant blow to the occupation contingent. Furthermore, Zelenskyy noted the importance of replenishing the exchange fund, which is a critically important factor for returning Ukrainian prisoners of war home.

Commander-in-Chief's Operational Briefing: From January to August

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Mykhailo Drapaty detailed the results of the offensive. According to him, from January to August 2026, Ukrainian troops liberated 26 settlements in the Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, and Zaporizhzhia regions. In particular, over the last week, airborne assault forces, consisting of 4 brigades and two assault regiments, took control of about 15 square kilometers of territory. Drapaty also reported to the President on the situation regarding the defense of Donetsk region and anti-ballistic defense, as well as discussed important personnel issues necessary to maintain the army's combat readiness.

Strategy for Victory: Asymmetry and Diplomacy

Mykhailo Drapaty revealed his vision of the path to Ukraine's ultimate victory. He described a clear algorithm of actions, which includes intensifying operations in various domains (land, air, sea, cyberspace) and applying asymmetric approaches. Long-range aviation remains an important element of the strategy. As reported earlier, some operations were adjusted, however, Ukraine has approved new strikes on targets on Russian territory. Zelenskyy emphasized that the high precision of such operations creates the necessary conditions for possible diplomatic solutions, forcing the enemy to make concessions.

Contradictory Data

Despite the optimistic statements from the Ukrainian command, alternative assessments are present in the information space. While official sources from the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the President speak of a large-scale liberation of 745 km², a number of Russian and pro-Kremlin media outlets (such as "Komsomolskaya Pravda") characterize the actions of the new Commander-in-Chief Mykhailo Drapaty differently. In particular, source ID 2 claims that under Drapaty's command, the Armed Forces of Ukraine are suffering massive losses along the entire line of contact. These assertions are in direct conflict with Drapaty's statement that the army is "on the rise" and demonstrating high efficiency. For now, an independent audit of this contradictory data is difficult due to the lack of access to both sides of the conflict.
