Apple is preparing one of the most extensive display upgrades to its product lineup in recent years: according to a DigiTimes report cited by RBC-Ukraine, the company plans to transition five popular devices from the Mac and iPad families to modern OLED panels. The transition will be carried out in stages between late 2026 and 2029. As of today, most models in the lineup are still equipped with LCD screens, with the sole exception being the MacBook Pro, which uses a mini-LED panel. Thus, the upcoming technology shift will affect tablets, laptops, and desktop computers alike, changing the visual characteristics of both flagship and mid-range models.

OLED Transition Timeline

According to sources, the iPad mini will be first in line for the upgrade, with its OLED-panel release slated for late 2026. Significantly later, in the 2028–2029 window, the iMac and MacBook Air will receive the new panels. The official announcement of the iPad mini and MacBook Pro with OLED displays is rumored to take place as early as October of this year. The introduction of organic LEDs into the iPad Air, iMac, and MacBook Air models will likely be accompanied by a full hardware upgrade: the iPad Air has a chance to become the thinnest and lightest tablet in the entire lineup, while the new MacBook Air may get a redesign that inherits the design codes of the flagship Pro models. Meanwhile, the iMac has kept its current look since 2021, so by the time its OLED version arrives in 2028–2029, its design will have gone unchanged for at least seven years.

Panel Technology Differences

Although rumors about an OLED screen in the compact tablet have been circulating for a long time, the panel technology in the iPad mini will differ from that installed in the iPad Pro. The mini version will use a single-layer LTPS-based panel, whereas the Pro model uses a dual-layer LTPO. This means the flagship iPad Pro will retain its advantage in contrast, viewing angles, response time, and peak brightness. At the same time, the move to OLED overall will give users more accurate color reproduction, higher contrast, and a true deep black thanks to individually lit pixels. It is also noted separately that the new MacBook Pro with an OLED display will feature an eighth-generation panel and is expected to support touch input and a 5G module.

Performance and Chips

According to sources, the performance of the new iPad mini will be handled by the A19 Pro chip, already used in the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air, although analysts do not rule out a more powerful A20 Pro processor. As for the first OLED laptops in the Pro series, they may ship with M5 processors instead of the expected M6 chip, a compromise solution to speed up the model's market launch. It is also unconfirmed whether the new iPad mini will support a 120 Hz ProMotion refresh rate or retain the previous 60 Hz — this parameter remains one of the key unknowns ahead of the official announcement.

The statements from various publications and the details of the DigiTimes report contain inconsistencies that are important to keep in mind. First, sources offer two options for the iPad mini chip — A19 Pro and A20 Pro — with no final decision. Second, the OLED MacBook Pro is expected to use the M6 chip, yet the first models may ship on M5, which conflicts with the initial forecasts. Third, a number of foreign media outlets (Mashable, FoneArena) highlight in the same time window the imminent launch of the desktop Mac mini and AirPods 5, whereas the Ukrainian version of the report names the iPad mini and MacBook Pro as the central figures of October. This creates ambiguity about which Mac device will be the "showcase" of the autumn presentation, although the release timelines for the OLED iPad mini versions largely align.

For the end consumer, the phased transition to OLED means a gradual narrowing of the display-quality gap between flagship and more affordable Apple models. Deep black, high contrast, and accurate color reproduction, which were previously the preserve of top-tier devices, will become more accessible in the iPad mini, iPad Air, iMac, and MacBook Air lines. At the same time, the flagship iPad Pro will maintain its technological leadership thanks to its dual-layer LTPO panel, and buyers waiting for specific refresh rates or chips should keep in mind that some specifications have not yet been officially confirmed and may change by the time of the October 2026 announcement.
