Ukraine's largest mining and metallurgical enterprise, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, has officially announced its transition to a deep cold shutdown mode. This decision was made by the company's management against the backdrop of an unprecedented escalation and a series of devastating missile strikes by the Russian Federation on the region's industrial infrastructure. The constant threat to employees' lives and critical damage to production facilities made it impossible to maintain even a minimal technological cycle.

Chronology of Strikes and Human Casualties

The decision to mothball the assets was preceded by a series of four heavy missile attacks targeting the plant's territory and adjacent life-support facilities. As a result of these barbaric shellings, six qualified plant workers were killed, and more than 18 others sustained injuries of varying severity. The scale of destruction of production shops and energy infrastructure required emergency measures to prevent even larger-scale man-made disasters.

CEO Mauro Longobardo emphasized that the transition to cold shutdown is a forced and extreme precautionary measure. It is not just a temporary pause in the technological process, but a complex risk management procedure aimed at protecting human lives and preserving surviving equipment. The process of conservation and safe shutdown of all units will take about two months.

Contradictory Data

While the official management of ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih declares plans for the complete conservation of the metallurgical cycle for an indefinite period until active hostilities cease, discussions are emerging in the expert community regarding the timing of a possible resumption of work. Some independent analysts point out that the process of cold shutdown of blast furnaces and coke plant production could irreversibly damage some unique equipment, requiring billions of investments for a restart. At the same time, the company's management insists on the controllability of the process and the preservation of the base for future restoration.

Socio-Economic Consequences for the Region

The shutdown of a giant like ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih will inevitably trigger a domino effect for the entire economy of the Dnipropetrovsk region and related industries in Ukraine. The plant was a town-forming enterprise, providing jobs for tens of thousands of citizens and forming a significant share of tax revenues to budgets at all levels. Local authorities and trade unions have already started consultations on minimizing social consequences for specialists going on downtime.

The management of the ArcelorMittal group categorically denies rumors about a complete withdrawal from Ukraine and the closure of the business. The main priority is declared to be the preservation of the team and material assets. After the security situation stabilizes, the company intends to start a constructive dialogue with the Government of Ukraine on developing a roadmap for resuming the plant's operations when favorable conditions arise.
