This week, Latvian military personnel recorded another dangerous incident on the state border with Belarus. During patrolling, a group of at least 20 illegal migrants was stopped, accompanied by armed masked guides who openly threatened Latvian soldiers.

The aggressive nature of the provocation

According to the official information of the National Armed Forces of Latvia, this border crossing was clearly planned and targeted. The guides not only drove the migrants towards Latvian territory but also demonstrated aggression, using weapons to intimidate the border patrol.

The military department notes that this behavior differs significantly from most previous incidents in this area. While previously smugglers tried to avoid direct contact with law enforcement officers, now they act defiantly, creating a direct threat to the lives of servicemen.

Hybrid threats and crisis context

Riga regards this incident as an element of targeted hybrid warfare, within which illegal migration is used as a political lever of pressure not only on Latvia but also on the entire European Union and NATO. Experts predict further escalation of similar provocations on the eastern borders.

Recall that the migration crisis at the borders of Belarus with the EU has been ongoing since the summer of 2021. Against the backdrop of ongoing tension, the Latvian army continues to provide comprehensive support to the border guard service on the borders with Belarus and Russia.
