The Executive Board of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has decided to award Russia the hosting rights for the 2030 Adult World Championships. The tournament, which will take place in Moscow, will not only be the main season event in an Olympic sport, but also a venue for distributing quotas for the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane. According to Sport RBC.UA, citing Suspilne Sport, this is the first competition of this level in an Olympic sport to be entrusted to Russia since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Kyiv's position: the decision 'goes beyond all bounds'
Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Matvii Bednyi commented on the IWF's decision, calling it 'an alarming and unacceptable signal'. According to the official, appointing Moscow as the host of the 2030 World Championships goes beyond all recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). 'This decision has a predominantly symbolic meaning for the Russians, but under such conditions, no self-respecting country will send its team there,' Bednyi stated. He emphasized that Ukraine intends to appeal the IWF decision both to the IOC and directly to the weightlifting federation itself.
The principle of 'not yielding the venue' and its limits
Ukrainian sports policy follows a general principle: to continue fighting in international arenas and not to leave competitive space for athletes from the aggressor country. Bednyi outlined this very logic as the basis of Kyiv's position in most international starts. However, according to him, the IWF decision on the 2030 World Championships is 'extraordinary', and in this specific case, the principle does not apply to a trip to the Russian capital. 'Our general position is to participate in competitions and not leave the venue to the Russians. But this is an extraordinary decision, and of course, our athletes will not go to Moscow,' the head of the Ministry of Youth and Sports emphasized.
Legal steps and doubts regarding tournament realization
In addition to public condemnation, the Ukrainian side intends to take concrete legal steps: an appeal against the IWF decision will be submitted to the IOC and the federation itself. Bednyi also expressed significant doubts that Russia will ultimately be able to host the 2030 World Championships. At the same time, he noted that the situation may change by 2030, and final conclusions regarding the format and admission to the tournament will be made closer to the date of the competition.
Context: sports diplomacy and Olympic quotas
The IWF's decision acquires special weight partly because the 2030 World Championships will be linked to the distribution of Olympic quotas for the 2032 Brisbane Games. This means that the issue of admitting Russian athletes to the global event directly affects the Olympic system. For Ukraine, which consistently advocates for maintaining the neutral status of sports venues, such a precedent is viewed as a systemic problem rather than an isolated decision by a single federation. The discussion surrounding the admissibility of holding the tournament in Moscow is expected to continue at the IOC level and within international sports structures in the coming months.
