International trade tensions have reached a new peak. On July 24, China officially imposed retaliatory sanctions on 14 legal entities from the European Union. This decision was a direct response to Brussels' actions, which adopted its 21st package of restrictions against Russia the day before.
Official Decision by Beijing
Information regarding the inclusion of European enterprises on the blacklist appeared on the official website of the Ministry of Commerce of the PRC. The decision was made by the China Security and Export Control Bureau. The document clearly states that 14 European companies are now subject to export controls.
The essence of the imposed restrictions is a complete ban on the supply of goods and services to the specified entities. Beijing has ordered all exporters to immediately cease any relevant activities with these companies. The decision takes effect from the moment of its publication.
Mechanism of Sanction Application
Despite the strict wording, Chinese regulators have provided for an exemption mechanism. If an export deal with one of the sanctioned companies is truly necessary, the exporter must submit a corresponding application to the Ministry of Commerce of the PRC to obtain permission.
Causes of Escalation
The trigger for Beijing's actions was the adoption of the EU's 21st package of sanctions against the Russian Federation the day before. In response, Brussels had previously restricted the activities of 14 companies from mainland China and Hong Kong, which, according to the EU, are linked to the Russian military-industrial complex. Thus, both sides reacted in a mirror fashion to each other's actions, affecting 14 enterprises on each side.
Outlook for Conflict Development
The situation remains dynamic. Ukraine has already begun preparing the 22nd package of sanctions against Russia, which is expected to contain evidence of the abduction of Ukrainian children. Experts note that EU countries are increasingly making concessions to agree on new restrictive measures, however, such escalation may have serious economic consequences for all participants in the conflict.
