Brazil as a Bridge: Celso Amorim Confirms the Country's Role in Diplomatic Dialogue Between the West and Russia

Speaking before the Commission on External Relations and National Defense (CREDN), Amorim emphasized that Brazil defends a multipolar world order and does not automatically align with any side in the conflict. "Brazil takes a position of neutrality and advocates for deepening international cooperation without interference, preserving national sovereignty," the diplomat stated. According to him, it is precisely this position that allows the country to rank first in global diplomacy in terms of trust from all sides of the conflict.

Request from the West: Brazil as a Mediator

Amorim revealed details of appeals he personally received from representatives of Western European countries. "I have been approached personally in some cases by the president, in others by other officials, ambassadors, and ministers from Western European countries. They ask for our dialogue with Russia because they say that Brazil is one of the few countries that maintains dialogue with both the West and Russia," the advisor emphasized. This indicates that Western countries see Brazil as a reliable mediator capable of conveying messages or organizing informal consultations between the parties.

Reaction of the Conflict Parties: Ukraine and Russia

Against the backdrop of these statements, both sides of the conflict expressed their positions regarding possible mediation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously stated that greater involvement of the United States would help bring the Russian Federation back to peace negotiations. In his view, an active stance by Washington is the real way to persuade Russian leadership to engage in full-fledged dialogue on ending the war. For its part, Russia also made a statement regarding its readiness to resume consultations. As noted by the head of the International Affairs Committee of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, Grigory Karasin, Moscow is ready to consider peace proposals, but put forward the condition that initiatives from only one side would be taken into account.
