New batch of specialized equipment from Brussels

On August 17, 2026, Kyiv received three new fire trucks from the Brussels Fire and Emergency Medical Service (SIAMU). This was announced by the city's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, in his Telegram channel, emphasizing that the equipment was delivered as part of ongoing international cooperation between partner cities. According to him, these vehicles are critical for rapid response to emergencies, especially during enemy attacks, and will help save more lives.

The delivery was made possible thanks to active support from the leadership of the Brussels-Capital Region, including Mayor Philippe Closon and Regional President Boris Dillies. The President of the Saint-Pierre Foundation, Roland Cracco, and the head of the Brussels City Hall's international networks department also played a role. The equipment was handed over directly to Kyiv's emergency services and is already ready for operation.

Partnership history: from ambulances to internships

Brussels has supported Kyiv since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Over the past years, the Belgian capital has transferred not only fire trucks but also ambulances, generators, and medical and rehabilitation equipment for hospitals. Special attention was paid to preserving cultural heritage — assistance was provided to protect the exhibits of the Ivan Honchar Museum.

The partnership went beyond material aid: Ukrainian medics and rescuers underwent internships in Belgium, exchanging experience with local colleagues. Additionally, Kyiv children had the opportunity to rest in safe conditions on Belgian territory. This testifies to deep humanitarian cooperation between the two cities.

Memory of the fallen hero: Olivier Francotte

During the visit of the Brussels delegation, Mayor Klitschko, together with partners, honored the memory of Senior Sergeant Olivier Francotte, who died on August 14, 2026, during a rescue operation following an explosion at the building of the Single Committee on Settlement Issues in Brussels. Francotte was known as a friend of Kyiv and an active supporter of cooperation between the rescue services of the two cities.

"He did a lot for the cooperation of our cities' rescue services. Eternal memory to him, as well as to Ukrainian rescuers and soldiers who died saving and protecting people's lives!" — Klitschko wrote in his message. This moment became a symbol of mutual respect and a shared mission — protecting life in wartime conditions.

Contradictory data

Although official sources confirm the fact of the transfer of three fire trucks, some independent reports mention that one of the trucks was transferred earlier, in July 2026, and only two in August. However, representatives of SIAMU and the Brussels City Hall insist that all three units of equipment were delivered and put into operation simultaneously on August 17. At the moment, there are no official documents confirming or refuting the version of a phased transfer.

Significance for Kyiv in 2026

In the context of ongoing hostilities and regular attacks on infrastructure, every new unit of specialized equipment has strategic significance. Fire trucks allow for faster localization of fires, evacuation of the injured, and minimization of damage. For Kyiv, which remains one of the most vulnerable cities, such assistance is not just humanitarian support, but an element of survival.

International partnership with Brussels demonstrates that even in wartime, cities can maintain ties, exchange experience, and jointly solve critical tasks. This is an example of how solidarity turns into real help that saves lives.
