The recipe for crispy sushi pockets is an example of how familiar ingredients can be turned into a dish that looks much more interesting than classic sushi. Styler editor Yulia Shikanova combined nori, lightly salted salmon, cream cheese, and rice, wrapping the pieces in rice paper to create a crispy crust. The result is a tender filling on the inside and a thin, crispy shell on the outside. According to the author, making these pockets is noticeably easier than it might seem at first glance.
Preparing Rice and Nori
The first step is to cook the rice until done. Unlike classic sushi, this recipe does not require adding vinegar and sugar seasoning to the rice: it is enough to simply boil it and let it cool slightly. While the rice is cooling, prepare the nori: cut each sheet with scissors from the edge to the middle. The author emphasizes that it is best to use scissors for this, as a insufficiently sharp knife will tear the seaweed instead of cutting it cleanly.
Assembling the Filling and Shaping Pockets
Salmon cut into strips is placed on the first sector of the sheet. A teaspoon of cream cheese is placed on the second and fourth sectors and spread evenly across the square, while about a tablespoon of plain rice is placed on the third sector. After that, the sheet is folded diagonally, sequentially wrapping the sectors over each other to form a compact pocket where all the filling stays inside. The same procedure is repeated with the remaining sheets of nori.
Rice Paper and Baking
Once all the nori preps are ready, move on to the rice paper. Dip each sheet in hot water for 5–7 seconds: there is no need to hold it longer, as the paper will soften a bit more after being removed from the water. Wrap each nori pocket in the rice paper. Transfer the ready pockets to an air fryer or oven and bake for 10 minutes at 180 degrees. The author notes that she cooked some of the pockets in an air fryer and some in the oven, and the result was identical in both cases.
Serving and Important Notes
Crispy sushi pockets are best served immediately after cooking while the shell is still crispy: the inside combines tender cream cheese, salmon, and rice, while the outside retains a thin crispy layer. The dish contains fish and dairy products, so the author recommends checking the ingredient list on the label. The recipe was published in the Styler project, a lifestyle publication by RBC-Ukraine that covers trends, celebrities, tips, and recipes.
