The United States has witnessed an unprecedented wave of cyberattacks targeting water supply and wastewater systems. According to the latest data, facilities in at least 12 states have been hit. Experts describe this campaign as one of the most significant attacks on municipal water infrastructure in recent years.
Security Gaps and Affected Regions
A key feature of the incident is that attackers gained access to systems that, according to security protocols, should not have been connected to the global network at all. This points to critical vulnerabilities in the protection of critical infrastructure.
Minnesota bore the brunt of the attack, where cybercriminals targeted dozens of water supply systems. Several communities experienced equipment malfunctions and pressure surges in the pipes. The situation worsened to the point where local authorities were forced to recommend that residents boil water before consumption. Nevertheless, official representatives assure that there have been no confirmed cases of drinking water contamination or threats to public health.
Investigation and Suspected Culprits
Federal agencies in the US, including the FBI, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), are investigating the incidents. While no group has officially claimed responsibility for the attacks, US officials and experts lean towards the theory that hacker groups linked to Iran are involved.
Specialists note that these events have once again demonstrated the fragility of the American water infrastructure. Many facilities continue to use outdated management systems and do not receive sufficient funding for cybersecurity modernization. In response to the threat, cybersecurity volunteer groups have already begun assisting local water utilities in strengthening their defenses.
Parallels with the Situation in Ukraine
The events in the US echo warnings from Ukrainian authorities regarding risks to their own infrastructure. Previously, Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that water supply has become a new strategic target for Russia during the war in Ukraine.
According to the minister, while the population can still cope with a lack of electricity, the disconnection of water and sewage systems makes survival practically impossible. The goal of such attacks, in the view of the authorities, is to create unbearable living conditions to pressure society against the government and force Ukraine to capitulate.
