Unexpected admissions have emerged from Tehran regarding the tense situation surrounding the incident in the Caspian Sea. Iranian official Mohsen Rezaei stated that the country did indeed consider launching a retaliatory strike against three targets on Ukrainian territory. According to him, the plan was ready for implementation, but ultimately, it was abandoned.
Admission of Readiness to Strike
Rezaei confirmed that the Iranian side was prepared to use force. "We were ready to strike three targets on Ukrainian territory, but after the country apologized, we cancelled the attack," he noted. These words came amidst continuing threats from Tehran in response to the attack that occurred at the end of July.
Incident in the Caspian Sea
The situation escalated on July 26, when Iran accused Ukraine of attacking a civilian vessel in the Caspian Sea. Tehran reported the death of one sailor and the injury of another. At the same time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated otherwise: he called the strike successful and claimed the vessel was being used to transport military cargo to Russia.
According to media reports, in response to the incident, Iran considered the possibility of a missile strike on one of Ukraine's seaports. However, following a phone call between Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha and his Iranian counterpart, the situation was de-escalated. Kyiv emphasized that its actions were aimed solely at defending against Russian aggression and called on Iran to stop supporting Russia's war.
