Europe has seen the appearance on the market of potentially deadly ecstasy tablets molded in the shape of the head of US President Donald Trump. According to experts, the pills contain a significant amount of a particularly dangerous substance whose use can lead to overheating of the body and death. The discovery of such tablets prompted an emergency warning issued by a leading European center for the study of drugs and addiction.
The Trimbos Institute's 'red alert'
A special 'red alert' was issued by the Trimbos Institute — a research center for drugs and addiction located in Utrecht, the Netherlands. According to the institute's representative Anniek Grotgeus, the tablets examined are produced in various colors, are shaped like the head of the American president, and bear the inscriptions 'Trump' and 'NL'. The institute emphasized that such substances must not be consumed under any circumstances. Several drug testing points have already received samples for analysis, although the total number of tablets in circulation remained unknown at the time the message was published. Previously, Grotgeus said, experts had encountered tablets shaped like the Superman logo or bearing the symbols of car brands.
The dangerous substance PMMA and its effects
The Trimbos Institute reported that the tablets contain a very large amount of paramethoxymethamphetamine, or PMMA. In terms of its properties, this substance is similar to MDMA — the active ingredient in classic ecstasy tablets, which became especially popular alongside the development of rave culture in the 1980s–1990s. Several hours after consumption, a person may suddenly experience nausea, a rapid heartbeat, seizures, and a very high body temperature. Using such tablets can lead to overheating of the body with a potentially fatal outcome, which is what prompted the highest level of alarm declared by the researchers.
Context: Trump's anti-drug rhetoric and the fight against drugs
Ironically, Donald Trump himself is known not to consume alcohol and to view illicit psychoactive substances critically, which forms much of the basis of his anti-drug campaign in the United States. Ahead of the 2024 US elections, in an interview with podcaster Theo Von, he called cocaine a 'dirty and disgusting thing'. Recently, the White House presented a new strategy for combating drugs. Against the backdrop of these statements, large-scale operations continue in Europe: it was previously reported that Amsterdam airport staff were detained after the interception of 321 kilograms of cocaine, while law enforcement in Ukraine exposed and detained the organizers of an international drug smuggling channel.
