Rising prices for auto parts and repair work are pushing more and more Ukrainian drivers to seek reliable financial protection tools. According to the National Bank of Ukraine, the payout ratio for CASCO insurance had already exceeded half of the collected premiums by 2026. At the same time, consumer habits are changing: instead of paper documents and trips to an agent, the market offers fast digital solutions that allow you to issue a policy directly in a banking application. RBC-Ukraine, together with PrivatBank, insurance companies, and lawyers, figured out how smartphone car insurance works, what each tariff covers, and how to protect yourself from unpleasant surprises in the event of an insured event.

The CASCO Market is Accelerating: NBU Figures for 2026

For many Ukrainians, a car is a tool for daily mobility and a way to feel safe. Voluntary vehicle insurance (CASCO) has long ceased to be exotic, but until recently, getting a policy took significant time: paper documents, a separate trip to an agent, and waiting for an expert to inspect the car. According to the National Bank of Ukraine, in the second quarter of 2026, CASCO premiums increased by 24.2% compared to the first quarter and by 23.8% compared to the same period last year. The NBU attributes the growth in transport insurance to an increase in the number of concluded contracts and a seasonal increase in trips abroad by Ukrainians.

Payouts are also growing. According to NBU information, from 2021 to 2025, gross CASCO premiums increased from UAH 11.4 billion to UAH 16.9 billion, and payouts from UAH 4.3 billion to UAH 8.2 billion, which is almost a twofold increase. The payout ratio for this product already exceeds half of the collected premiums. The National Bank explains this by the rising cost of repairs: losses from insured events are becoming larger, which directly affects the burden on insurers.

Two Levels of Protection: From Basic to Maximum Package

Previously, classical CASCO, according to representatives of the insurance company UNIQA, was perceived as an "all-inclusive" option mainly for new or leased cars. Today, drivers are more often looking for a balance between price and real protection level. According to UNIQA, in 2026, Mini CASCO sales increased by an average of 30–40% compared to 2025. "Buying a policy has become as simple as topping up a mobile phone or paying utility bills," the company notes.

Currently, the partners of the service in the PrivatBank application are two insurance companies — UNIQA and VUSO. The bank reports that it plans to expand the list. You can calculate the cost and issue a policy by following the navigation: “More → Insurance → CASCO”. Next, the client chooses one of two levels of protection. Mini CASCO is basic protection against accidents involving two or more cars: it covers both accidents with the driver's fault and without it. The insured amount is fixed at UAH 100,000, 150,000, or 250,000, and the cost does not depend on the market price of the car. Issuance takes place without inspection: the bank specifies a timeframe of 5–10 minutes. According to UNIQA, the price of Mini CASCO starts from UAH 430 per month.

Full CASCO is the maximum package. It covers accidents even without other participants (for example, hitting an obstacle), theft, fire, natural disasters, falling objects, and illegal actions of third parties. The insured amount corresponds to the full value of the car, which the application estimates online. Damaged glass or the consequences of minor accidents can be settled without calling the police — limits depend on the insurer. Under UNIQA conditions, if the driver of the insured car is not at fault, the deductible is UAH 0.

Digital Inspection: Five Minutes Instead of an Expert Visit

The key difference of the digital format is the automated inspection. First, the system automatically calculates the cost of the car based on the specified data. Then the client in the application takes real-time photos of the car from four sides, the mileage, the VIN code, the registration certificate, and damages, if any. The inspection itself takes about five minutes; after the client signs the agreement, the insurer typically reviews the application within a day. To protect the process from fake photos, the developers provided an additional level of security: uploading pre-prepared images is impossible, and with the client's consent, geolocation, date, and time of shooting are transmitted. During the first 90 days of launching the product in Privat24, 11,849 car evaluations were carried out — over 120 per day.

Coverage Under Wartime Conditions: What is Included and What is Excluded

"Modern insurance must be exactly like this: invisible and easy at the application stage, but guaranteed reliable at the right moment," says Maryna Plastomak, Director of the Project Operations Department at PrivatBank within the VUSO insurance company. According to her, under combat conditions, there are no regions that can be called 100% safe: no city is insured against shrapnel or blast waves. If a car is damaged by missiles, drones, or debris, the policy will cover losses within the total insured amount. Protection is valid throughout the country, with the exception of occupied territories, active combat zones, and a 50-kilometer strip from the frontline or the border with Russia. You can check the status of your settlement or community directly in the application before issuing the policy.
