The situation in the Middle East has reached a critical point. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) and the Iranian Ministry of Defense have officially confirmed an unprecedented incident: Iranian ballistic missiles struck the Mafraq-Salti airbase (also known as Al-Azrak) in Jordan.

This is not just a provocation, but a massive escalation that has changed the rules of the game. The missiles bypassed the air defense perimeter and hit key facilities of the American contingent, which uses the base as a logistics hub.

The Cost of Error: Losses and Destruction

According to the official CENTCOM briefing, the consequences of the strike were severe. Two US service members were killed in the attack. Another four soldiers sustained injuries of varying severity and were urgently evacuated to medical facilities. One service member is officially listed as missing in action (MIA).

With this incident, the total number of US military fatalities since the start of the open phase of the armed confrontation with Iran (February 28, 2026) has reached 16.

Video footage from open sources and objective control data recorded extensive destruction. Medium-range ballistic missiles launched by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) struck:

  • personnel quarters (barracks);
  • specialized fuel storage tanks (fuel bladders);
  • elements of the command and control center.

Context of the Strike: From Logistics to War

The Mafraq-Salti airbase plays a strategic role for the Pentagon. Fighter squadrons of F-16s are deployed there, actively used to strike coastal radar stations and the defensive infrastructure of the IRGC in the Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf. The Iranian strike was aimed precisely at this node.

The Iranian Ministry of Defense and the IRGC stated that the attack is a legitimate response to ongoing coalition strikes on Iranian transport and economic infrastructure, including the blockade of port facilities in Bandar Abbas.

Diplomacy Collapses: Withdrawal from Agreements

Official Tehran announced its withdrawal from the June memorandum of understanding, which provided for a temporary freeze on hostilities. Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei emphasized that the peace initiatives of the Donald Trump administration have lost legal force due to violations of the agreement by the American side.

According to the provisions of international law, a mutual withdrawal from ceasefire agreements returns the parties to the status of a full-scale armed conflict. This removes mutual legal restrictions on target selection, including military logistics facilities on the territory of third countries.

US Response and Jordan's Position

In response to the incident, US Defense Minister Pete Hegseth issued a statement regarding the unchanged strategic goals of the US in the region. The White House issued an order for the immediate transfer of additional air units: F-16 fighters from bases in Germany and fifth-generation multi-role F-35 aircraft from stations in the UK to reinforce air defense and air groups in the Middle East.

The Government of Jordan, declaring neutrality in this conflict, confirmed the deployment of national air defense systems to intercept aerial targets. However, in Amman, it was acknowledged that the density of the missile salvo led to a breach of the defensive perimeter in the Azrak area.
