Against the backdrop of an anomalously hot summer and a lack of rainfall in the Dniester River basin, a serious water management drama is unfolding. Due to a sharp drop in water levels, the Dniester Reservoir has lost its characteristic features in certain areas and increasingly resembles a natural riverbed. The situation has become so critical that authorities have been forced to impose strict restrictions on dozens of enterprises.
Critical Water Levels and Officials' Visit
The situation at the reservoir requires constant monitoring. On August 4, a delegation of representatives from Ukraine and Moldova inspected the state of the Dniester Reservoir and the operation of the Khotyn water intake in the Chernivtsi region. The visit was necessary to assess the actual situation and find solutions to ensure uninterrupted water supply.
According to the Ministry of Economy and Environment of Ukraine, as of August 4, the water flow rate at the Zaleshchiki city cross-section was only 38.8 m³/s. This figure indicates a critical shortage of water resources in the region.
Restrictions for Business and Infrastructure Adaptation
The consequences of low water levels are already being felt by the economy and the population. In July, the State Agency of Water Resources was forced to restrict the right to special water use for 92 water users in the Dniester basin. This decision became a necessary measure to conserve water under conditions of scarcity.
The Khotyn water intake is facing particular difficulties. The enterprise had to urgently adapt the water intake system to maintain centralized water supply for the community residents. Changes in the water level in the reservoir directly affect the operation of pumping stations and require an operational review of intake schemes.
Forecast: Heat and Lack of Rain
The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center offers no grounds for optimism in the near future. Throughout August, hot weather is forecast to persist, and precipitation levels will remain below the climatic norm. The ministry warns that the absence of rain could lead to a further deterioration of the water management situation in the region.
European Context of the Problem
The problem of water shortage this summer is large-scale and not limited to Ukraine's borders. Record-low water levels are also being recorded on the Danube, which negatively affects water supply and the operation of entire economic sectors in European countries. Experts link these processes to global climate changes affecting the hydrological regime of rivers.
