The National Bank of Ukraine has set the official foreign exchange rates for Monday, October 26, 2026. The U.S. dollar showed growth, updating its historical maximum, while the European currency also noticeably increased in price amid current market trends.
Dynamics of Official Exchange Rates for October 26
On Monday, October 26, the National Bank of Ukraine fixed the official dollar exchange rate at 45.20 UAH. Compared to Friday, October 23, when the American currency was valued at 45.05 UAH, the figure increased by 15 kopecks, setting another record high. The official euro exchange rate also demonstrated an upward trajectory.
As of the same date, the European currency was set at 50.57 UAH. The increase amounted to 14 kopecks compared to the figure on October 23, when the euro exchange rate was 50.43 UAH. These changes reflect ongoing economic pressure on the country's domestic currency market.
Government Bonds as an Alternative to Buying Cash Currency
Foreign currency internal government bonds can potentially serve as an alternative to the traditional purchase of foreign banknotes, but their availability remains limited. As financial analyst Andriy Shevchyshyn explained in a commentary, there are few foreign currency government bonds on the market due to current regulatory restrictions.
In the past, such financial instruments were often used to bypass existing restrictions, which is why the Ministry of Finance and the National Bank are purposefully reducing their issuance. Because of this, retail investors may find it difficult to find free foreign currency bonds for subsequent purchase on the open market.
Yield and State Guarantees on Bonds
The key difference between foreign currency government bonds and purchasing cash dollars or euros lies in the regular receipt of coupon payments. The purchase of physical currency itself does not generate additional passive income, and earning on it is possible only with a further increase in the exchange rate.
The expert also drew attention to the level of reliability and state guarantees for internal debt obligations. The risk of default on hryvnia government bonds is estimated as minimal, since it is significantly easier for the state to provide payments in the national currency than to refuse to fulfill internal obligations.
Significance of Current Changes in the Currency Market
The updating of historical maximums for the official dollar and euro exchange rates demonstrates stable macroeconomic trends and pressure on the Ukrainian financial system. The search for alternative capital preservation instruments, such as government bonds, is complicated by regulatory restrictions, forcing investors to carefully weigh all risks and advantages when managing their savings.
