The Verkhovna Rada has officially approved a new head of the Ukrainian government. On July 16, the parliament supported the candidacy of Serhiy Kortsyk, who replaced Yulia Sviridenko in this position. 289 people's deputies voted for the appointment.

The process of changing power in the Cabinet of Ministers began earlier this week. On Tuesday, July 14, the parliament adopted a decision on the resignation of the previous Prime Minister and her entire composition. Since Sunday, when President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to update the team, there have been active discussions about personnel changes in the political arena. It is expected that most ministers will retain their positions, although a number of key posts will be redistributed.

From Business to Government

The new Prime Minister is a person with a strong background in management and energy. Serhiy Kortsyk is the current head of NAFC "Naftogaz of Ukraine", to which he was elected in April 2025. Prior to this, he headed "Ukrnafta" and "Ukrtatnafta" since November 2022.

His career in the energy sector began long before his public service. For almost 20 years (from 1997 to 2018), Kortsyk worked at the "Continuum" group of companies. Since 2013, he has headed the WOG gas station network, where he implemented new development strategies and actively developed the cafe direction. Later, he implemented his own projects, including the IDEALIST coffee shop chain and the energy trading company Centurion Group SA in Switzerland.

Education and Challenges

Kortsyk has three higher education degrees: "Automobiles and Automobile Industry" and "Enterprise Economics" (Lutsk Technical University), as well as "Oil and Gas Production" (Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas). In 2019, he completed the Executive MBA program at the Kyiv-Mohyla Business School.

The appointment of Kortsyk as the head of "Naftogaz" in 2025 coincided with a difficult period when the Russian army began massive attacks on Ukraine's gas infrastructure, which led to a significant drop in daily gas production. Under his leadership, the enterprise modernized equipment and launched the drilling of new wells.

Now, this experience and management skills will be applied at the level of the national government, where Kortsyk will have to solve the tasks of restoring the economy and managing resources in the conditions of the ongoing conflict.
