The European Commission has just announced an additional budget allocation of over 210 million euros (approximately 236 million US dollars) for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, opening new career opportunities for more than 700 researchers across Europe.
Scaling Up the EU's Flagship Research Program
MSCA is one of the European Union's premier programs for developing research careers. The new funding is part of the 'European Choice' initiative, aimed at establishing the EU as a leading global hub for scientific talent, research, and technological innovation. European Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation Ekaterina Zaharieva announced this decision during high-level events celebrating the 30th anniversary of MSCA in Brussels.
Leadership Perspective from the European Commission
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that over the past 30 years, MSCA has helped researchers worldwide build successful careers in Europe. Executive Vice-President Roxana Mînzatu emphasized that researchers play a central role in the EU's drive to build a robust 'Skills Alliance' and foster sustainable economic growth through cutting-edge knowledge.
Funding Allocation and Historical Growth
The additional funds will target two core components of MSCA: postdoctoral fellowships and doctoral networks, bringing their budgets to historic highs. Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2026, the program has grown from supporting around 800 researchers annually in its inception year of 1996 to approximately 8,000 researchers today, including 23 Nobel Prize laureates.
