Finnish President Alexander Stubb stated that Helsinki intends to significantly strengthen Ukraine's air defense to help Kyiv withstand the expected winter attacks by Russia. In his words, Ukraine's air defense is a "key issue" on which all of Kyiv's allies should focus. Stubb emphasized that he had already discussed this topic with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelenskyy, RBC-Ukraine reports, citing the outlet "We Are Ukraine."
What exactly Helsinki will hand over
"We will provide Ukraine — I will not say exactly what we will provide — certain critically important air defense systems that Finland still has," Stubb declared, deliberately not disclosing the details of the deliveries. At the same time, he drew attention to the practical side of the issue: in his view, it is extremely important to help Ukraine protect its energy infrastructure, as well as to supply the country with generators and diesel engines. "We all know that winter is approaching. Finns and Ukrainians know a thing or two about winter," the president added, pointing to both countries' experience in harsh frost conditions.
Ballistics and the search for interceptors
Against the backdrop of threats from Russia, Stubb reminded of Moscow's capabilities in producing ballistic missiles and assured that the search for interceptors for the Ukrainian Armed Forces is ongoing. "We know that Patriot systems exist in different corners of the world, not only in Europe, but also in the Middle East and the US. And there are many other avenues we need to work on," he emphasized. Thus, Helsinki considers expanding the air defense arsenal not only through its own stockpiles but also through coordinated efforts by allies around the world.
Context: night defense and new deliveries
Stubb's statement came against the backdrop of operational events: on the night of August 27, Ukrainian air defense again intercepted Russian ballistics, confirming the relevance of the problem. Earlier, according to RBC-Ukraine, Kyiv received a new batch of missiles for Patriot systems. In addition, media are discussing that British politician Andy Burnham intends to lobby US President Donald Trump to transfer additional Patriot missiles to Ukraine, which could become yet another channel for replenishing Ukraine's air defense shield.
Winter as a pressure factor
The strategic message from Stubb is that the approaching winter must not become a "serious blow" for the Ukrainian people. The Finnish president is effectively calling on allies to preemptively mobilize air defense resources before the onset of cold, when strikes on the power grid cause maximum damage. The inclusion of generators and diesel engines on the agenda indicates an understanding that even with successful intercepts, some strikes will hit their targets, and the country needs backup power sources to minimize the consequences.
