During hearings in the US Senate, General Dan Caine revealed information that could mark a turning point in the history of the air war in Ukraine. According to him, Ukrainian pilots flying F-16 fighters have achieved their first victory in an air battle by shooting down a Russian aircraft. This event confirms the effectiveness of the equipment supplied by the West and the growing combat capabilities of the Ukrainian Air Force.
A new stage of layered defense
General Caine emphasized that this success was made possible thanks to years of support from international partners. "Recently, we witnessed the first air battle in which a Ukrainian F-16 shot down a Russian fighter. Over the past few years, thanks to the support of many partners, Ukraine has significantly strengthened its layered defense system," stated the American military commander.
These words came against the backdrop of ongoing debates over military aid to Kyiv. Confirmation of the actual combat use of Western fighters and their success in destroying enemy equipment is an important argument for supporters of continuing arms supplies.
US position: Who is the winner and who is a friend?
In addition to technical details and combat successes, the hearings also addressed the geopolitical aspect of the conflict. Senators asked General Caine a direct question about US strategic goals: "Who do we want to see as the winner in the war between Russia and Ukraine?".
The question regarding Russia's status in the system of international relations prompted a more cautious response from the general. Answering whether Russia is a friend of America, Caine noted the complexity of current relations: "I think these are complex relationships... I don't think they are our friends." Such wording reflects the tough stance of the Pentagon and the US administration towards Moscow at the current stage of the conflict.
"Hellish sanctions" and the White House position
Parallel to the discussion of Ukraine's military successes, the issue of economic pressure on Russia is being actively discussed in the American political arena. In particular, attention is drawn to Senator Lincoln Graham's bill, known as the "hellish sanctions".
Earlier, the White House stated its readiness to support this initiative, aimed at maximizing restrictions on the Russian economy. However, according to Axios, the adoption of the document is in question. The main factor of uncertainty is Donald Trump's position, who has not yet expressed full support for the bill, which could become a decisive obstacle to its implementation in the future.
