On August 19, 2026, the active phase of extinguishing a massive forest fire continues in the Cherkasy district. The fire, which started in the village of Kumeyky, has turned into a serious threat to the region's ecosystem. According to the latest data from the State Emergency Service (SES), the fire has covered an area of 100 hectares. The incident, which began with a fire in a utility building on private property, quickly spread to the forest area and a nearby landfill.
Mobilization of forces and difficult conditions
Significant resources have been deployed to fight the fire. 208 rescuers and 55 units of equipment are working on site. Operational intervention is being carried out by SES units, the local fire department of the village of Yasnogorya, as well as the educational fire and rescue unit of the National University of Humanities and Ecological Sciences (NUHES) and forestry employees. The situation is complicated by strong gusts of wind, which contribute to the rapid spread of flames and complicate the work of fire crews. Although the fire has been contained, work on its complete elimination continues around the clock.
Catastrophic fire statistics in Ukraine
The situation with forest fires in the country remains tense. According to the SES report for the past 24 hours, 456 fires occurred in ecosystems across Ukraine. The total area of damaged territories exceeded 375 hectares. This indicates the large-scale nature of the problem faced by rescuers in different regions and requires strengthening fire safety measures in forest zones.
Contradictory data
During information gathering, discrepancies were identified regarding the duration and scale of the fire in the Cherkasy district. Official SES data indicate that the fire started in the village of Kumeyky and was contained on an area of 100 hectares. However, sources, including materials from RBC-Ukraine, mention that the forest has been burning for the second day. This may indicate that the fire started earlier but was noticed or classified as a major incident only after it got out of control. The difference in versions may be related to the moment the fire signal was reported and the time official extinguishing work began.
Environmental threat in Kirovohrad region
In addition to the situation in Cherkasy, a serious problem is created by a fire in the Kirovohrad region. Near the village of Zarya in the Pervozvanivska community, former sewage settling ponds have been smoldering for the fourth day. Rescuers worked at the site all night on August 18 and by the morning of August 19 had doused about 2.8 hectares of territory. However, it was not possible to completely eliminate the smoldering, and work continues. Because of this, smoke spreads over significant distances, reaching the city of Kropyvnytskyi, which creates a threat to residents' health and complicates life in the region.
