In France, weeks of student strikes are escalating into the threat of massive nationwide protests, which observers estimate could unfold as early as October 17. The coincidence of the student movement with the return to the political arena of the «yellow vests» — a force that shook President Emmanuel Macron’s government eight years ago — places the authorities in an extremely difficult position and turns street mobilization into a major stumbling block amid upcoming presidential elections. The protest front, which until recently looked like a local student conflict, risks turning into a broad cross-class movement encompassing several social groups at once.

The «Yellow Vests and Youth» Campaign

Following a series of massive student strikes, the «Yellow Vests» movement officially launched a new initiative called «Yellow Vests and Youth». As part of a powerful social media campaign, this structure calls for support of the protest from diverse segments of society: teachers, workers, farmers, pensioners, and directly youth and students. Thus, the movement that eight years ago became a symbol of protest against Macron's social policy is trying to transfer its organizational experience and mobilization resource to a new, broader social demand, primarily related to study conditions and the future of young French people.

Budget Stalemate and Inflationary Pressure

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu publicly expressed deep concern over the risk of clashes and «urban violence» amid growing budget pressure and dissatisfaction with police actions. The government aims to increase tax revenues and cut spending to reduce public debt, while protesters demand, on the contrary, increased spending, improved public services — primarily in education — and measures to curb inflation, which reports indicate has exceeded 3% largely due to the consequences of the conflict in the Middle East. It is this contradiction between the austerity course and the demands for expanding social spending that forms the main economic contradiction of the current crisis.

Police Violence as a «Spark»

In addition to economic disagreements, the harsh actions of security forces are becoming a «spark» igniting anger. Reports indicate that thousands of people were arrested during the student protests, and many teenagers sustained serious injuries in clashes with the police. «We didn't coordinate our actions in advance, but we all share the outrage at witnessing police violence against students», said François Boulo, a representative of the «Yellow Vests» movement. In turn, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed that authorities are ready to use flash-bang grenades in the event of serious violence, which only underlines the tension of the situation and the risk of its further escalation ahead of October 17.
