An incident involving the use of ammunition occurred in Podilsk, Odesa region, resulting in injuries to a minor. A 51-year-old man, who was intoxicated, threw a grenade towards a group of teenagers.

Incident Details

The events took place near a local educational institution. According to the investigation, the suspect began harassing the children, provoking a fight, and threatening them. Despite warnings from passersby, the man retrieved an explosive device and threw it towards the teenagers.

As a result of the explosion, a 13-year-old boy sustained physical injuries. Medical personnel provided assistance on site, and hospitalization was not required. The final nature of the injuries will be determined by a forensic medical examination. Debris was seized from the scene of the crime, which, according to preliminary findings, belongs to a fragmentation hand grenade.

Suspect Status

Law enforcement officials determined that the suspect is a serviceman who deserted his military unit. He has been informed of suspicion under Part 4 of Article 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (hooliganism involving a weapon or an item prepared in advance to inflict bodily harm).

The penalty for this article provides for imprisonment for a term of 3 to 7 years. The court has remanded the suspect into custody without the right to post bail.

Context

Recently, a tragedy involving similar weapons occurred in the Kharkiv region: three men died due to careless handling of a grenade while consuming alcohol. In that case, the ammunition was found in a sweater, and the explosion occurred after the safety pin was pulled.
