Rockstar North has, for the first time in the series' history, tightly linked story missions with open-world activities: in Grand Theft Auto VI, player progression will directly depend on their financial situation. According to RBC-Ukraine, this was stated by Rockstar North's development lead Rob Nelson in an interview with Famitsu. In his words, capital will become the key link between the main missions and free-roam mode, which radically changes the familiar progression model established in previous entries in the series.
Finances as a condition for continuing the story
The main consequence of the new mechanic: completing only the main story missions will not provide the player with enough funds to unlock subsequent stages of the story. In other words, the protagonist may end up "stuck" in the middle of the plot if they run out of money. To move forward, players will have to seek sources of income outside the main quests, turning the character's economy into a full-fledged element of narrative progression rather than a background detail.
Heists at the center of the new system
Although the developers have not yet revealed all the ways to earn money, preliminary data suggests that the key focus will be on heists and small criminal side jobs. The process of planning and carrying out raids in the open world is expected to become significantly deeper and more complex compared to the previous entry: players are promised a more refined planning mechanic, rather than simply executing steps in a linear fashion.
Community reaction
On Reddit, this integration was generally received positively: fans hope that it will give more value to free-roam heists and allow players to plan raids independently — disabling surveillance cameras and alarms, sneaking in through the back entrance without forced shootouts. At the same time, concerns are also being voiced in the community: if earning the necessary funds boils down to repetitive and monotonous side missions, the positive expectations from the new mechanic may not be met.
Contradictory data
It is important to distinguish between what is confirmed and what is expected. Officially, it has only been confirmed that, according to Rob Nelson, finances will become the link between the story and the open world, and that the main missions alone will not be enough. However, the specific details — the focus specifically on heists, the "significant complication" of raid mechanics, as well as planning scenarios (cameras, alarms, back entrance) — are mentioned in the original text as expected or based on preliminary data, rather than as facts fully revealed by the developer. Moreover, the community's position is not unified: some players welcome the innovation, while others fear monotony. Thus, the core of the statement is confirmed, while the peripheral details remain in the zone of expectations and interpretations.
Release date
As a reminder, the release of Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. The new financial progression system, by Rockstar's design, is intended to become one of the key differences of the sixth installment and to encourage players to more actively explore the open world rather than limit themselves to completing story missions.
