The Ukrainian defense industry is undergoing a major personnel reorganization. The General Director of the state-owned enterprise 'Ukrainian Defense Industry' (Ukroboronprom), Herman Smetanin, has officially announced his resignation. This decision is the latest in a series of changes initiated following tragic events in the Kyiv region.
Personal statement by the head of the agency
News of Smetanin's departure emerged from his personal message in a Telegram channel. The head of the state enterprise confirmed that he is concluding his term as General Director, calling the opportunity to lead the country's largest defense structure a great honor.
In his farewell address, Smetanin highlighted a key achievement of his tenure: the formation of a powerful professional team capable of working effectively at all production sites of the enterprise. He expressed gratitude to a wide range of individuals and structures, including the President of Ukraine, the government, the Verkhovna Rada, the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), the General Staff, and the Armed Forces Command.
Special thanks were addressed to engineers, designers, and partners who worked on the development of the domestic defense industry. Smetanin also thanked his loved ones for their support and wished the new leadership success in fulfilling the state mission.
Context: Explosions in Vishneve and personnel purges
The departure of the head of 'Ukroboronprom' occurred against the backdrop of high-profile events in the industry. On the night of July 6, Russian forces struck an ammunition depot located on the territory of one of the state concern's enterprises in the city of Vishneve, Kyiv region. The incident led to massive explosions and destruction.
In response to the incident, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ordered comprehensive inspections in the defense sector and announced personnel decisions. As a result of the investigation, violations of ammunition storage rules were identified.
Before Herman Smetanin's resignation, the company had already announced the dismissal of two heads of specific enterprises. 'Ukroboronprom' stated that those guilty of violating safety regulations would face criminal liability. Thus, the resignation of the General Director became part of the state's massive reaction to the incident, aimed at reviewing safety and management standards in this critically important sector of the economy.
