In Apple's ecosystem, the Wallet app has long ceased to be just a storage place for business cards and coupons. As of 2026, it is a full-fledged digital wallet that manages payments, transit cards, digital keys, and even transfers between devices. RBC-Ukraine, citing Lifehacker, looked into the less obvious capabilities of the service that most users never discover, even though they solve everyday problems in daily scenarios — from a dead battery to not wanting to share your phone number when sending money.
Express Mode: payments and access when your iPhone is off
One of the most practical features is Express Mode. It lets you use transit cards, passes, and digital keys without unlocking the device via Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. The key advantage of this mode is that it works on the battery's residual charge: even if your iPhone has completely shut down due to a drained battery, you can still pay for a metro ride or unlock a digital door. This scenario is confirmed by international publications that call it the "dead iPhone trick."
Virtual cards and dynamic CVV for secure purchases
If an online store or service does not support direct payment via Apple Pay, Apple Cash users can generate a virtual card number. The three-digit security code (CVV) changes with every autofill or use of the card, making it virtually impossible to steal banking details even in the event of a data leak. This is an important protection mechanism to keep in mind when entering card details on third-party platforms.
Automatic card selection via Shortcuts
Using the Shortcuts app, you can set up the automatic suggestion of the right card based on the user's location. For example, when entering a supermarket, your iPhone can automatically open a card with an increased cashback on groceries or a discount card for a specific chain. This automation saves time and helps you systematically take advantage of the most favorable loyalty terms.
Tap to Cash: transfers without sharing contacts
The Tap to Cash feature lets you transfer money between two iPhones or Apple Watches without having to share a phone number, email address, or username. For the transaction, you just need to enter the amount in the Apple Cash settings, confirm the operation by double-pressing the side button, and bring your device close to the recipient's phone. This makes transfers more private and faster compared to classic schemes based on identifiers.
Digital keys and order aggregation
Apple Wallet can store digital keys to cars, homes, or hotel rooms, and vehicle keys can be shared via messengers or AirDrop. At the same time, the owner can set restrictions for another driver: define a maximum speed or the audio system volume. It is also worth noting the aggregation of information about all purchases made via Apple Pay: the order tracking section shows the current delivery status of goods without the need to visit third-party courier websites.
