The Pension Fund of Ukraine has clarified the mechanism for widows of retirement age to transition to survivor's pension payments. According to current legislation, a woman who has reached retirement age is officially recognized as a disabled family member. This gives her the legal right to apply for a survivor's pension; however, a key and mandatory condition for exercising this right is that the spouses must have lived together at the time of the husband's tragic passing.

Conditions of Appointment and Calculation of Payments

The amount of the new pension is determined strictly as a percentage of the deceased spouse's payments and amounts to 50 percent of his old-age pension. For example, if the late husband received a pension of 9,600 hryvnias, his widow has a guaranteed right to receive half of this amount, which is 4,800 hryvnias. Age-related allowances may be added to this amount. In particular, if a woman has turned 72 years old, she is entitled to a monthly state compensation payment of 300 hryvnias, as a result of which the total monthly provision reaches 5,100 hryvnias, exceeding her previous old-age pension.

Controversial Data

While the standard procedure for transitioning to a survivor's pension is clearly regulated for civilians, debates often arise in expert circles and the media regarding calculation methods for families of military personnel or individuals affected by the Chornobyl disaster. Some sources indicate fixed minimum thresholds for such payments or special allowances depending on the status of the deceased, which often leads to confusion among citizens when independently assessing the potential benefit of transferring their pension file. PFU specialists emphasize the need for an individual approach to each specific case, taking into account all existing benefits and laws.

Application Procedure and Deadlines

The process of transferring from one type of pension provision to another does not happen automatically and requires active steps on the part of the citizen. To do this, it is necessary to contact any convenient service center of the Pension Fund of Ukraine in person, send the package of documents by mail, or use modern electronic services through the fund's official web portal. You must have identification documents, a marriage certificate, and your husband's death certificate with you. The most important nuance is that the new type of pension is accrued exclusively from the date of official submission of the application, and not from the moment of the husband's death, so delaying contact with state authorities is strongly discouraged.

Experts also remind us of related nuances of pension legislation that can affect the final amount of financial assistance. In particular, a pensioner's employment can lead to the loss of certain types of age-related supplements and allowances intended exclusively for non-working citizens. In addition, individuals living abroad or in temporarily occupied territories must timely undergo the physical identification procedure until the end of the year to avoid a temporary suspension of pension payments by the state.
