Sleepless nights and chronic stress, which over recent months have become a constant companion of life due to nighttime shelling, take a toll not only on how you feel but also on your appearance. After just one night spent on your feet, your skin can lose its freshness: your complexion turns dull, and swelling, dryness, and noticeable dark circles under the eyes appear. Exclusively for Wave RBC.UA, cosmetologist and dermatologist Yulia Yaromlyuk explained which steps really help the skin recover faster during the day and what you should avoid if you want to "catch up" with your body after a lack of sleep.

First steps after a sleepless night

According to the specialist, it is best to start the morning with a cool or contrast shower — this helps you wake up faster and feel more energized. For the face, however, you should not use water that is too cold: room temperature is enough. After washing, the cosmetologist recommends applying a toner or another moisturizing product containing centella, hyaluronic acid, or ceramides — it is precisely these ingredients that help restore the skin's elasticity and compensate for the moisture lost overnight.

Fighting under-eye swelling

If puffiness under the eyes is especially noticeable after a sleepless night, eye patches pre-cooled in the refrigerator come to the rescue: the cold temporarily reduces swelling and gives the eyes a fresher look. Masks chosen to suit your skin type are also appropriate — after a lack of sleep, hydrating formulas work best, as do products with vitamin C or green tea extract. A light facial and neck massage also helps reduce puffiness, though it is important not to press on the skin, especially in the sensitive area around the eyes.

Nutrition and hydration

During the day after a sleepless night, you should watch your fluid intake and prefer plain water. The dermatologist explicitly advises against trying to compensate for fatigue with energy drinks, and recommends limiting coffee to one or two cups a day. Alcohol during such periods also does not help the body recover. If your face is prone to swelling, pay attention to your diet: foods high in salt and spicy seasonings promote fluid retention, so it is best to avoid them in large quantities after a sleepless night.

Movement as a way to recover

Despite the fatigue, moderate physical activity is acceptable after a sleepless night. Yulia Yaromlyuk advises listening to how you feel and choosing Pilates, yoga, stretching exercises, a jog, or a strength workout. Physical exercise not only improves overall well-being but also stimulates the release of neurotransmitters — in particular endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin — which helps the body "reboot" after a stressful night.

The most important thing is full sleep

At the same time, the specialist emphasizes: the most important way to recover from a lack of sleep remains sleep itself. Cosmetic procedures and home care can temporarily improve the appearance of the skin, but they cannot fully compensate for a chronic lack of rest. Therefore, according to the dermatologist, even during periods of prolonged stress, you should create conditions for full sleep whenever possible — it is the foundation without which no care routine will work at full strength.
