South Korean automotive group Hyundai, which suspended its active operational and manufacturing activities in the Russian market back in 2022, has taken strategic steps to protect its intellectual property. The company has officially registered ten new trademarks with Rospatent, securing legal control over key brands for the long term.
Asset Protection and New Certificates
As official data shows, applications for trademark registration were submitted by the South Korean auto giant between 2024 and 2025. Following the successful completion of all procedures at Rospatent, the obtained rights to the registered trademarks will remain valid until 2034–2035. Among the officially protected intellectual property objects are six different variations featuring the traditional Hyundai logo and name, three options involving the name and symbols of the premium Genesis subbrand, and the industrial designation Trago Xcient.
Contradictory Data
In expert circles and mass media, the news about the large-scale trademark registration sparked a wave of speculation regarding a possible prompt return of the South Korean manufacturer to the Russian market. Some observers and bloggers rushed to interpret this move as establishing logistical or legal grounds for resuming vehicle deliveries or restarting local production. However, official representatives and market analysts emphasize that the mere fact of extending or formalizing brand rights has no direct connection to the resumption of commercial car sales. Foreign corporations often use this practice solely for defensive purposes.
Expert Assessments and Rospatent's Stance
Commenting on the situation, experts refer to explanations from Rospatent's leadership, specifically agency head Yuri Zubov. According to his stance, the extension and registration of trademarks by foreign companies that left the country serve as a reliable tool to prevent counterfeit products. This helps curb the unauthorized use of recognizable names by third parties and protects consumers from fakes. In addition, this approach allows automakers to maintain their business reputation and brand recognition in a temporarily inaccessible market until economic conditions change.
Market Consequences
Hyundai's legal maneuver demonstrates the pragmatic approach of major multinational corporations to managing intangible assets amid global uncertainty. Although buyers and dealers in Russia continue to face a shortage of new official supplies, the Korean brand has securely insured itself against any attempts of hostile name takeovers or illegal production under its emblems. Such measures guarantee that in the event of a radical shift in foreign economic conditions, the company can return to the market with a completely clean and protected legal field.
