India and ASEAN member states are demonstrating a commitment to strengthening strategic partnership in the Indo-Pacific region. During the recently concluded two-day forum in New Delhi, the parties discussed key areas of joint work, including the defense industry and maritime security, against the backdrop of growing geopolitical challenges.

Strategic Dialogue in New Delhi

The first ASEAN-India Defense Think Tank Forum, held on October 14–15, 2026, brought together representatives from 11 states. In his opening address, Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized the importance of building an inclusive region where all countries possess autonomy in protecting their interests. The initiative for this major event originates from the second informal ASEAN-India Defense Ministers' Meeting held in Kuala Lumpur in October 2025.

Maritime Security and Technological Cooperation

With 2026 declared the ASEAN-India Year of Maritime Cooperation, special attention has been paid to protecting sea lanes and information sharing. India has expressed readiness to supply and jointly produce patrol vessels, radars, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles. New Delhi also emphasizes joint research in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, space technology, and counter-drone systems.

Prospects for Defense Autonomy

India's defense autonomy policy aims at close cooperation with reliable partners through joint design and technical support. This approach helps minimize regional risks, counter transnational threats, and ensure the stability of global supply chains in a changing world order.
