Ukrainian Defense Forces have faced technological limitations in the Starlink satellite communication system that critically impact the effectiveness of intercepting new Russian drones. The speed limit of 160 km/h set by SpaceX creates serious obstacles for interceptor drones attempting to neutralize enemy jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles in the air.

Background and the core communication issue

The issue became particularly acute against the backdrop of changing air strike tactics by the Russian army, which has begun actively using jet modifications of drones. Previously, the Ukrainian military department and the General Staff managed to secure official regulation of Starlink terminal operations at speeds up to 160 km/h from SpaceX after a series of appeals. However, in practice, Starshield terminals used on drones demonstrate unstable performance, and the fixed speed limit proves insufficient for modern interception means.

Technical limitations and agency response

According to sources in the security sector, in addition to the established limit, technical glitches were recorded at the front line where bandwidth and communication disappeared even at lower speeds — ranging from 80 to 160 km/h. Representatives of the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff held negotiations with Elon Musk's company, during which specific examples of failures were provided. SpaceX promised to stabilize the connection, but the strict limit of 160 km/h remains in effect, making the pursuit of fast air targets impossible.

Contradictory data

While official specialized agencies and sources within the Defense Forces report the retention of the strict 160 km/h limit that blocks the pursuit of jet targets, government officials and the Ministry of Digital Transformation report a partial restoration of stable terminal operations and the successful resolution of several technical issues in cooperation with SpaceX. Such discrepancies are explained by the fact that basic connection stability on standard terminals has indeed improved, but physical speed limitations for specialized flying platforms and interceptors remain an insurmountable barrier.

Security consequences and the search for alternatives

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Russian forces took advantage of temporary communication disruptions and limitations to organize one of the largest air attacks, under which Kirovohrad region, among others, was targeted for several hours. In response to current challenges, Ukrainian military specialists and engineers are actively working to create alternative communication channels and continue consultations with the provider to minimize risks in combat conditions.
