The iFixit laboratory has completed a detailed teardown of the new iPhone Duo foldable smartphone, which has generated significant interest in the mobile electronics market. Experts assigned the device a repairability score of 5 out of 10. This result marks a new record for the foldable smartphone segment, indicating significant changes in the architecture of the device's internal components compared to competing solutions.
Design and Display Features
A detailed microscopic examination of the screen revealed the use of a unique matte coating. It consists of microscopic rounded bumps that effectively diffuse light, making the display crease virtually invisible to the human eye. Removing the protective layer revealed that the crease itself is structurally more pronounced than in similar models from other manufacturers.
Engineers utilized an unconventional approach to pixel arrangement: oval subpixels in red, green, and blue are set at variable angles. This engineering decision is aimed at minimizing optical distortions. At the same time, replacing the internal display is an expensive procedure, costing $999 without AppleCare, which accounts for nearly half of the device's retail price.
Hinge Mechanism and Damage Protection
The hinge system, equipped with a complex set of gears and springs, allows the device to be fixed in a semi-open position. Despite its high-tech nature, tests using fluorescent powder revealed the structure's vulnerability to small particles, such as dust and sand. The ingress of foreign bodies into the mechanism causes a distinct crunching sound when the smartphone is folded.
Unlike the main screen, the external protective display coating is repairable. Its replacement costs $49, although specialized service equipment is required. The internal screen is also equipped with sub-pixel backlighting in the area of the front-facing camera, although this technical addition does not yet provide high image quality.
Energy Efficiency and Board Architecture
The teardown confirmed significant improvements in the layout of internal units. The batteries, with a total capacity of 19.1 Wh, are now equipped with electrical glue that peels away when a low current is applied, significantly simplifying removal. Metal battery cases provide additional protection against accidental mechanical puncture during repairs.
The iPhone Duo's motherboard is implemented in a single-layer design, providing easier access to critical components. Nevertheless, iFixit engineers required five different types of screwdrivers to fully disassemble the chassis, indicating high requirements for service center tooling. This release occurs against the backdrop of overall growth in the foldable device market, where, for instance, sales in Russia reached 53,000 units in the first half of 2026.
Market Impact and Outlook
The iFixit assessment highlights Apple's shift toward a more modular architecture, a positive signal for the foldable device industry. At the same time, the identified issues with hinge seal integrity remain a major barrier to the device's longevity. In the near future, the reliability of the iPhone Duo will be tested by real-world usage conditions, which will determine the trajectory for the company's foldable lineup.
