The upcoming winter could become a serious test for Ukraine and European countries hosting refugees. Amid ongoing combat strikes on energy infrastructure and a complex socio-economic situation, the Polish side is proactively calculating various scenarios. Piotr Łukasiewicz, Chargé d'Affaires of Poland to Ukraine, openly stated in a media interview that Warsaw is already conducting preparatory work in case of a potential new influx of citizens from Ukraine.
Creative planning and winter forecasts
According to the Polish diplomat, state institutions and humanitarian services are trying to forecast the situation for the coming months. Piotr Łukasiewicz noted that the upcoming winter might resemble the conditions of two years ago, when the energy crisis in Ukraine was particularly acute. However, he emphasized the element of uncertainty, suggesting that reality may turn out completely different and more unpredictable than current expert models assume.
Humanitarian fatigue and steadfast support
Despite the colossal burden on host states and the general fatigue of European societies from the protracted conflict, Warsaw's official stance remains unwavering. Poland continues to provide comprehensive support to Kyiv and Ukrainian citizens who have found temporary refuge on its territory. As the embassy representative noted, society and authorities may experience exhaustion from the prolonged crisis, but this in no way affects strategic support for Ukraine.
Changes in migration legislation and benefits
It is worth noting that against the backdrop of migration processes, Poland continues to adapt its legislation. Earlier, the rules for providing social payments '800+' and '300+' were changed in the country, where a key condition became the mandatory attendance of Polish educational institutions by Ukrainian children. Such measures are designed to strengthen the integration of minors into the local educational space while streamlining the distribution of state aid.
