Kherson plunged into darkness: massive blackout after attack on critical infrastructure

On the night of August 6, the city of Kherson faced a complete power outage. The cause of the massive blackout was a Russian attack on a critical infrastructure facility, which led to serious damage to the power grids. Alexander Prokudin, Head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration (RMA), confirmed that the situation with power supply remains critical, and restoring the systems may take several days.

Extensive damage and work of energy workers

According to Alexander Prokudin, Russian strikes caused significant damage to the region's energy complex. Energy workers have already begun to eliminate the consequences of the attack and are working around the clock to restore electricity supply as quickly as possible. However, given the scale of the destruction, full restoration of power in the city may take from several days to a week. Experts note that such attacks on substations and distribution nodes require complex repairs, which often depend on the availability of spare parts and equipment.

Call to residents: do not overload the network

In connection with the expected restoration of electricity supply, the authorities of Kherson appealed to residents with an important warning. Alexander Prokudin urged citizens to exercise caution when turning on appliances immediately after the lights come on. In particular, it is recommended to refrain from simultaneously starting energy-intensive equipment: air conditioners, boilers, electric stoves, and washing machines. A sudden surge in load on the network could trigger new accidents and outages, which would significantly delay the process of full power restoration.

The attack on Kherson took place as part of a massive Russian strike on the entire territory of Ukraine. On the night of August 6, the enemy used 4 missiles and more than 100 strike unmanned aerial vehicles. Air defense forces managed to shoot down most of the targets, however, dozens of hits were recorded in various regions. In addition to Kherson, Sumy was hit, where Russian troops used guided aerial bombs, resulting in damage and casualties. There are also reports of an attack on the railway station in Lozova, Kharkiv region, where people were killed and injured.

While major sources, including RBC-Ukraine and UNIAN, refer to a complete loss of electricity in Kherson, some local reports mention partial power supply in certain areas. This may be due to the operation of emergency generators or the temporary restoration of individual lines. Nevertheless, official statements from the administration confirm that the city as a whole remains without centralized power supply, and the situation remains unstable.
