Night drone attack on Konotop: school, medical facilities and railway damaged, two people injured

Massive drone attack on the city

In the night of September 18, the Russian armed forces launched a massive strike on Konotop in Sumy Oblast using drones. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing statements by Artem Semenykhin, head of the Konotop city community, in his Telegram channel. According to him, the drone attack damaged social and critical infrastructure facilities in the city. The strike hit populated and transport zones, causing multiple destructions and disruptions in the operation of utility systems.

What was damaged in the city

Among the affected facilities, Semenykhin named educational institutions — specifically a kindergarten and School No. 11 — as well as medical facilities. The transport infrastructure and railway tracks were also damaged, and numerous private homes were affected by the attack. Thus, the strike immediately impacted several key areas of city life: education, healthcare, logistics and citizens' housing.

Gas and power outages

Particular danger is posed by the damage to the gas transmission network: due to a hit on the gas pipeline, part of Konotop was left without gas supply. At the same time, power outages are being recorded — in the areas where drones struck, power lines were damaged, leaving certain districts of the city without electricity. Restoring the networks requires time and the work of emergency services under conditions of ongoing threat.

Casualties

According to the latest data provided by the city administration, two people were injured as a result of the attack — women born in 1965 and 1991. No information about fatalities had been received at the time of publication; however, authorities emphasize that the situation remains dynamic and the data may be updated as rubble is cleared and damaged buildings are inspected.

Context: a series of strikes on Konotop

The September 18 attack was not the first in recent times. In the night of August 25, the Russians also struck Konotop: an agricultural enterprise and a railway track were destroyed, dozens of buildings were damaged, and part of the city was left without communications. Even earlier, in the night of August 24, the city was hit by a massive strike, as a result of which most of Konotop was left without power and a vehicle fleet was destroyed. The repeated attacks indicate that the city is systematically in the zone of targeted impact on infrastructure.

Contradictory data

The official version on the number of casualties (two women) is based on the statement of the city head and, at the time of publication, had not been independently confirmed with other figures; independent media outlets record the fact that there are casualties, but do not always provide an exact number. In addition, in open reports the dates of the two previous strikes (the nights of August 24 and 25) are given in close proximity, which in some retellings may lead to confusion in the chronology. Until clarifications are received from authorities and emergency services, both versions — the official casualty figure and independent reports on the damage — are considered consistent, but do not rule out further corrections.
