On the morning of September 23, 2026, Russian occupiers carried out a fresh strike on the capital of Ukraine. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, one civilian was killed and eight more people were injured as a result of the attack by enemy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The mayor of the capital confirmed in his Telegram channel that, as of 10:30, the number of injured had risen to eight, and one of the patients hospitalized in critical condition died in the hospital. Klitschko urged Kyiv residents to stay in safe places, noting that the drone attack on the city was ongoing.

Consequences of the attack: the deceased and the injured

The press service of the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office clarified that a 42-year-old man was killed in the UAV strike on a gas station in the Darnytskyi district of Kyiv. According to city authorities, four injured people were being treated in city hospital wards at the time of publication. The final number of the injured and the full list of the consequences of the enemy strikes were still being established at the time of preparing this article. In his address to residents, Vitali Klitschko emphasized that "one of the injured, who was hospitalized in critical condition, died in the hospital."

Geography of the strikes: which districts of Kyiv were affected

The drone attack affected several districts of the capital at once. In the Solomianskyi district, debris from a Russian drone fell onto the area between residential buildings, and a fire broke out at a transport enterprise. In the Holosiivskyi district, a fire was recorded in warehouse premises, as well as a UAV strike on a gas station. In the Darnytskyi district, according to Klitschko, a strike on a transport infrastructure facility was recorded; in addition, the roof of one of the gas stations caught fire as a result of the attack. Thus, the strikes hit both civilian infrastructure and facilities related to the city's fuel sector.

Investigation: the prosecutor's office classifies the attack as a war crime

Under the procedural supervision of the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office, a pre-trial investigation has been opened on the fact of a war crime, as provided for by Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Investigative actions are being carried out by officers of the Main Directorate of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in Kyiv and the Kyiv region. The classification under this article means that the prosecutor's office is treating the strike on civilian facilities — including the gas station where a person was killed — as a deliberate violation of the laws and customs of war.

Response of city authorities and appeal to residents

Vitali Klitschko, head of the Kyiv City State Administration, updated information on the consequences of the attack several times in his Telegram channel during the morning of September 23. In addition to data on the injured and the deceased, the mayor reported that the attack by enemy UAVs was ongoing and appealed to Kyiv residents to stay in safe places. Photos of the consequences of the strikes, including on the "Ukrnafta" gas station in Kyiv, were published by city services and eyewitnesses on social media.

Context: a series of aerial attacks on the capital

The September 23 attack became yet another episode in the ongoing aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities. As RBC-Ukraine previously reported, air defense forces neutralized a number of targets during this aerial attack, however, some drones broke through the defense and damaged civilian facilities.
