Kyiv has officially joined the list of cities where fifth-generation (5G) mobile network testing has been launched. Ukraine's largest operators — Kyivstar, lifecell, and Vodafone — simultaneously announced the start of new network operations in the capital. This event marks a new stage in the development of the country's digital infrastructure.
The benefits of high-speed internet can now be enjoyed not only at specific points but across all districts of the city. Operators have deployed coverage tailored to different user needs: from tourists to residents of residential areas.

Each operator has chosen its own network deployment strategy to most effectively utilize available frequencies and equipment.
The operator Kyivstar focused on the tourism and cultural aspect. Their network covers key locations in the city center, allowing guests and residents to enjoy fast internet near historical monuments and popular cultural sites.
lifecell chose a more utilitarian approach. Test coverage has been deployed in high-traffic zones, including transport hubs and large shopping centers. This solution aims to ensure stable connectivity in areas with large crowds.
Vodafone demonstrated the most extensive coverage. Their 5G network is available in test mode across all ten administrative districts of Kyiv, making their offer the most universal for residents of different parts of the capital.
Technical nuances and pricing
For users, switching to the new technology does not incur additional financial burdens. Operators have confirmed that traffic on the 5G network is billed exactly the same as standard 4G/LTE. No extra payment is required to connect to the high-speed network, and changing tariff plans or purchasing special services is not mandatory.
The connection process is fully automated. If a subscriber has a SIM card and a smartphone supporting the 5G standard, and the device settings are configured for the corresponding network type, the phone will automatically switch to the new network upon entering a coverage zone.
Context: 5G in Ukraine and the phase-out of 3G
Kyiv was not the first city in Ukraine to gain access to fifth-generation connectivity. Lviv holds the lead, where the technology launched earlier. Subsequently, 5G was also launched in Borodyanka and Kharkiv. Now the capital has joined this technological club.
The launch of 5G in Kyiv takes place against the backdrop of a massive modernization of the country's telecommunications market. The Ministry of Digital Transformation has already announced plans to fully phase out the outdated 3G technology by 2030. This decision will free up the frequency spectrum for more modern and efficient communication standards.
