Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will travel to the United States this week to participate in the meeting of the G20 foreign ministers. Bloomberg reports on the Russian minister's trip, and the details of the visit were revealed at a briefing in Moscow. According to Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, Lavrov will head the Russian delegation at the negotiations, which will take place on October 30–31 in the American city of Atlanta.
Format and Venue of the Meeting
The G20 ministerial meeting in Atlanta will be held as part of the U.S. presidency of the format this year. It will bring together the foreign ministers of the Group of Twenty countries ahead of the association's leaders' summit. As Maria Zakharova stated, Moscow intends to use this platform to promote Russian ideas aimed, according to her, at strengthening the foundations of a multipolar world.
Sanctions Status and Revival of Contacts
Drawing attention to the context of the visit, Bloomberg notes that Sergey Lavrov is under international sanctions related to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Nevertheless, he is becoming the latest Kremlin representative to visit the United States against the backdrop of reviving contacts between Washington and Moscow. Thus, the ministerial level of dialogue is maintained even while the sanctions regime against a number of Russian officials remains in place.
Ahead of the Miami Summit
The meeting in Atlanta is viewed as a preparatory stage for the main G20 event of the year. As noted in the materials, U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing to host the Group of Twenty leaders' summit in Miami in December. It is toward this summit that the current ministerial talks are leading, where the participating countries' positions on key items of the international agenda are being discussed.
Context of Statements on Ukraine
Lavrov's trip to the U.S. coincides with a series of his recent public statements regarding the Ukrainian track. On October 28, the Russian Foreign Minister stated that Russia's war against Ukraine will continue and, according to him, tends to escalate. He also previously stated that there would be no ceasefire to hold presidential elections in Ukraine. These remarks form the general background against which the Russian delegation is heading to the negotiations in Atlanta.
