The two women traded blows right up to the final attempt, but it was Patterson who ultimately took the gold: Mahuchikh's final mark of 199 cm earned her the season's silver medal.
A battle to the last attempt
The Ukrainian confidently cleared 197 centimetres before improving her mark by jumping 199 cm on her second attempt. Her only rival, Eleanor Patterson, also stopped at the same height, but the Australian cleared 199 cm on her first attempt. Under high jump rules, when results are equal, the athlete with fewer attempts takes the win — and that detail decided the final in Patterson's favour.
Patterson claims the "diamond" for the first time
The victory in Brussels marked the first major Diamond League trophy of the 30-year-old Australian's career. This season Patterson also took gold at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where she cleared 1.96 metres. In doing so, the Brussels final cemented her status as one of the leading high jumpers of her generation and added the season's most prestigious club title to her collection.
A losing streak in the season finale
For Yaroslava Mahuchikh, this is her second consecutive defeat in the fight for the season-final title. Last year the Ukrainian lost to another Australian — Nicola Olyslagers. Yet in 2022, 2023 and 2024 it was Mahuchikh who won the Diamond League Final, which makes the current run of two silver medals a notable step back from her previous dominance in this event.
Context: Olympic gold and a world record
Despite the silver in Brussels, Yaroslava Mahuchikh's status remains exceptional: she is the reigning Olympic champion in the high jump and the holder of the world record — 2.10 metres. These achievements continue to set the benchmark for an entire generation of high jumpers, including Patterson herself. It is also worth noting the other Ukrainian participants in the final: according to sports outlets, Anna Herashchenko took fifth place in the women's competition, while Oleksandr Doroshchuk won a medal in the men's disciplines at the Diamond League Final.
