On the night of August 19, 2026, Ukraine was subjected to a large-scale missile and drone strike by the Russian Federation. The attack began in the evening of August 18 and continued throughout the night, covering almost all strategic regions of the country. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the enemy used a wide range of weapons, including ballistic missiles, cruise munitions, and various types of unmanned aerial vehicles.
Scale and vectors of the attack
According to official reports, strikes were launched simultaneously from six directions. The list of regions from which the attacking means originated included the Kursk and Oryol regions of the Russian Federation, as well as the temporarily occupied territories of the Donetsk region, Crimea, and Gvardeysk. Such multi-vector nature of the attack indicates an attempt by Russian military forces to overload Ukraine's air defense system and break through to critically important infrastructure objects.
Effectiveness of air defense operations and enemy losses
As of 08:30 on the morning of August 19, the Ukrainian air defense system reported the neutralization of 56 enemy targets. These included Shahed and Gerber series kamikaze drones, as well as two heavy munitions of the "Banderol" type. Interception operations were carried out in the north, south, and east of the country. Despite the high density of the attack, the Air Force emphasized that at the time of the report, several enemy drones were still in the sky over Ukraine, and work to destroy them continues.
Consequences of strikes and infrastructure damage
Despite the efforts of the defenders, hits were recorded in ten locations across the country. In three additional places, the fall of debris from shot-down targets was recorded, which also poses risks to the population and infrastructure. Particular attention was drawn to the strike on the energy sector: one of the thermal power plants of the DTEK company, which was subjected to a massive shelling in the evening of August 18, completely ceased electricity generation. The company reminded that since the beginning of the full-scale war, their facilities have been targeted more than 230 times.
Casualties among the civilian population
Human losses were the result of attacks in a number of settlements. In particular, in Zaporizhzhia, one person was killed as a result of a drone strike, and six others were injured with varying degrees of severity. The hits caused fires and damaged both residential and non-residential buildings in the city. Rescue services continue to work at the scene of the incidents to eliminate the consequences and assist the victims.
Contradictory data
There are discrepancies in the estimates of the number of targets and directions of attack in different sources. The Ukrainian Air Force reports the neutralization of 56 targets and strikes from several directions. At the same time, some analytical summaries and media reports (in particular, RBC) indicate that drones flew from six directions, and the number of hits amounted to more than 10. The difference in figures may be due to the fact that the air defense counts all intercepted targets (including those shot down on approach), while data on "hits" reflects only actual hits on objects or the fall of debris in the territory of settlements.
