On the night of August 20, 2026, Russia launched a massive combined strike on Ukraine, employing ballistic missiles of various types, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The primary targets were Kyiv and the Kyiv region, along with several other regions. As of the morning, casualties and dozens of injured have been recorded in the capital and its suburbs; residential buildings, warehouses, industrial facilities, and elements of critical infrastructure have been damaged. The air raid alert in Kyiv, which began around midnight, lasted 8 hours and 45 minutes.
Timeline of the Night Attack
Immediately after the alert was declared, explosions were heard in the capital: ballistic salvos were fired at Kyiv and the region. As the attack developed, Kalibr cruise missiles flew into the city from the south, followed after 3 a.m. by several groups of cruise missiles. According to monitoring channels, some of the missiles performed maneuvers and traveled through Sumy, Kharkiv, Poltava, Cherkasy, and Chernihiv oblasts toward the capital. Meanwhile, drones were also detected in the airspace: by morning, air defense was again engaging drones over Kyiv.
Air Force Data and Outcomes for the Capital
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, on the night of August 20, air defense shot down or suppressed 31 cruise missiles, 8 Kalibr missiles, 2 Bandareli ballistic missiles, and 145 drones. Impacts were recorded at 28 locations, with debris falling at two more. The toll for Kyiv: 15 killed and 34 injured. The following day in the capital was declared a Day of Mourning. According to DTEK, after the attack, 40,000 homes were left without electricity, while 50,000 households have already regained power.
Destruction Across Kyiv's Districts
In the Sviatoshyn district, an impact was recorded on the territory of an industrial facility; fires broke out in warehouse buildings of 500 and 1,000 square meters, and one body was found. In the Solomian district, the eighth and ninth floors of a nine-story residential building were destroyed, and a fire broke out; in neighboring buildings, windows were blown out, a medical facility was damaged, cars, garages, and a store burned, and people remained trapped in residential buildings and a school shelter. In the Darnytsia district, the impact hit an unoccupied facility: a fire in warehouse premises and vehicles covered about 1,000 square meters, and rescuers handed one person over to medics.
Kyiv Region: Boryspil and Brovary
In Brovary, the strike damaged an industrial infrastructure facility: one person was killed and two were injured — a man born in 1966 was taken to hospital in critical condition, while the other received on-site assistance. Power lines were damaged, and some customers have been without electricity since the night; devices can be charged at "points of invincibility" in Brovary, Kniazhychi, and Trebukhiv. In the Boryspil district, 14 private homes, 4 warehouse buildings, a gas station, a multi-story building, and 8 vehicles were damaged, and six people were injured. Prime Minister Serhiy Haidai reported that food warehouses and Red Cross facilities were hit. The toll for the Kyiv region (Boryspil and Brovary districts): 1 killed, 7 injured; fires at two fuel infrastructure facilities, in warehouses, private homes, and a vehicle; 4 private homes destroyed and another 4 damaged, 3 vehicles destroyed and 1 damaged. In total, more than 40 people have been injured in Kyiv and the region.
Other Regions Under Attack
In Kharkiv, an impact from a Molniya-type UAV on a gas station was recorded. In the city of Pryluky in Chernihiv oblast, two Bandareli ballistic missiles arrived. In Cherkasy oblast, shot-down targets were reported. In the south of Odesa oblast, civilian infrastructure came under attack: power supply disruptions were observed in several settlements, and by morning 13,000 customers were left without electricity; at one location, two truck trailers carrying food caught fire. In Poltava oblast, after the night attack, missile and drone debris is being discovered, some of it with unexploded warheads. The President of Ukraine stated that the enemy had long been preparing for the strike, combining different types of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones; according to him, in Odesa oblast a border crossing point with Moldova was attacked by drones, and in Chernihiv oblast — gas infrastructure.
Contradictory Data
There are discrepancies in assessments of the scale and nature of the strike. The Ukrainian Air Force reports 31 cruise missiles shot down, 8 Kalibrs, 2 Bandareli, and 145 drones, while a number of Russian sources (in particular, svpressa.ru) present a different picture — of "25 missiles in half an hour" and an emphasis on Iskander and Tsirkon ballistic missiles, without confirming the Ukrainian drone figures. Moreover, the final figures for the killed and injured are given at different administrative levels (separately for Kyiv and for the region) and may be revised as rescue and medical teams continue their work. These inconsistencies in the details do not negate the fact of the massive attack and its consequences, but they call for caution when citing precise quantitative indicators.
