Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, expressed a hardline stance regarding the use of artificial intelligence by company employees during an internal event in early July 2026. In his view, the implementation of AI tools should serve exclusively to increase the volume of tasks performed and the creation of new products, rather than reducing working hours or granting additional days off.

AI as a Tool for Labor Intensification

The incident occurred when an employee asked if the productivity growth provided by AI could be used to increase free time. Specifically, the worker proposed reviving the "Meta Days" program, which previously allowed employees to take additional days off. Bosworth categorically rejected this idea. He stated that, despite the complexity of the work, the extra time freed up by technology should be invested in developing "an even greater number of products for users".

"I hope we spend our extra time creating more cool things for the people who use our programs every day. Billions of people use our products every day. I get an extra hour. You know what I'll do with it? I'll spend it on this," the CTO emphasized. He advised the employee who asked the question to "stop asking questions about 'Meta Days'. It's very stupid".

Career Risks and the "Harshness" of the Response

Bosworth justified his position from the perspective of career growth. He ironically remarked: "Ask your parents: if I ask my boss for extra days off every time we talk — how does that look from a career growth strategy standpoint?". Later, however, the CTO expressed regret that he responded "too harshly," admitting that he perceived the question as being asked ironically.

It is important to note the context of Meta's current HR policy. Company employees are provided with four weeks of vacation per year, as well as days off on public holidays. The "Meta Days" program was previously replaced by two floating holidays that employees can take at their discretion. Thus, the request to restore the old program was met with resistance by management.

Contradictory Data

The question of the impact of artificial intelligence on labor remains a subject of sharp debate in society and the business community. There is currently no consensus on exactly how AI will change the work process. According to one version, the technology will help people earn more and work at multiple jobs simultaneously, which aligns with Andrew Bosworth's position. Other experts and public figures believe that automation should free up people's time, which they can spend with their loved ones.

In particular, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos believes that in the AI era, the number of single-income households will grow, indirectly indicating the possibility of reducing overall working hours or changing the employment model. At the same time, Meta's position, voiced by Bosworth, demonstrates the desire of tech giants to maximize the return on implementing new tools without reducing requirements for employees.

Meta's Strategy in 2026

Bosworth's statement reflects the company's overall strategy, which is in a phase of active transformation under the influence of AI. In the face of fierce competition and the need to retain billions of users, Meta's management views AI not as a way to make engineers' lives easier, but as a lever to accelerate development and scale products. This places a task on employees to adapt to new realities where labor efficiency becomes a key factor in career success.
