Microsoft continues to consistently narrow the options for installing Windows 11 without binding it to a company account. This time, developers have eliminated a workaround that allowed users to create a local profile simply by clicking a link in the initial system setup menu. According to Windows Latest, the change was made server-side, making it virtually impossible for users to disable it locally.

How the loophole worked and why it vanished

Enthusiast Bob Pony drew attention to the unusual Windows behavior on October 9. The trick, discovered in September 2026, worked on the "Let's add your Microsoft account" screen: it was enough to click the "Learn more" link under the sign-in options, and the system would open a window for creating a local profile instead of the expected additional information. No command line input, registry edits, or disabling the internet connection were required—a single click sufficed. However, when checking a fresh image of Windows 11 version 26H2 downloaded directly from Microsoft servers, Windows Latest determined that the link now leads to a data management page, and the back button returns the user to the login screen. Apparently, the logic was toggled server-side, which precludes any possibility of bypassing it via local settings.

System policy: not the first step

Closing this bypass is not an isolated decision. Back in October 2025, Microsoft officially announced it was dropping support for known ways to bypass mandatory sign-in, including the OOBE\BYPASSNRO and start ms-cxh commands. At the same time, the availability of these commands may still vary on individual builds, which creates confusion among users relying on outdated instructions. The current change in 26H2 fits logically into this strategy: the company consistently closes each new workaround as soon as it becomes publicly known.

What remains for users

Alternative methods for installing Windows 11 without a permanently linked Microsoft account remain, although their list is shrinking. In the Windows 11 Pro edition, on supported builds, you can use the domain join setup. The Rufus utility allows for creating modified installation media on which mandatory login is disabled during the boot stage. A third option also exists: sign in with a Microsoft account first, then switch to a local profile in "Settings → Accounts → Your info." However, for a user who simply wants to install a purchased system and work without being tethered to online services, the process is becoming increasingly unfriendly and requires additional steps.

Context and prospects

Microsoft's stance on mandatory account sign-in during Windows 11 installation has remained unchanged since release: the company views binding to an online service as a core element of the user experience. Each new bypass discovered by the community is closed in subsequent updates, and increasingly so on the server side, which deprives enthusiasts of the ability to replicate the trick locally. For the end user, this means the choice between a "convenient" install with a Microsoft account and a "clean" local system is shifting toward the former, with alternative paths requiring increasing technical expertise.
